Things to see

  1. Town Hall/ Old Town – Surrounded by elaborate merchant houses and, in summer, packed with café tables, it’s a natural magnet for tourists. Find the round stone marked with a compass rose in the middle of the square. From this spot, with a little stretching and bending, you can see the tops all five of Old Town’s spires.   2. Seaplane Harbour – With the help of modern multimedia, the Seaplane Harbour in the wooden architecture tells exciting stories about the Estonian maritime and military history promising a “sea full of excitement” for the whole family on an area that would take nearly 2 million A4 paper sheets laid down side by side.   3. TV Tower – Visitors to the 314 metre tower will start the visit with a 3D film about the tower, get to enjoy an interactive exhibition on the greatest achievements of Estonians through the ages and a fascinating overview of the history of the tower itself before heading up to the viewing platform and café at the 170 metre level – the highest in the country. The landmark building is host to concerts, performances, exhibitions and open air events at different times throughout the year.   4. KUMU – The complex itself is a work of art – it was opened in 2006 after nearly a decade of planning and construction, and is considered a modern architectural masterpiece. Kumu’s exhibition aims to appeal simultaneously to a diversity of audiences. Exhibitions display both classical and contemporary art and everything in between. The museum programme features art from the 18th century until today, Estonian art until the Second World War, art of the Soviet era and a temporary exhibition programme of contemporary art.   5. Tallinn Zoo – If it hops, flies or slithers, you can find it at the Tallinn Zoo. Spread across an 87-hectare swathe of forested land, the zoo boasts one of Northern Europe’s best collections of animals. The list of its residents includes rhinos, vultures, camels, polar bears, pythons, lions, bison and dozens of other species. You can visit the crocodiles and chimpanzees in the Tropical House, or make your way over to the elephant house to see a pygmy hippo, a chinchilla, various snakes and, of course, elephants.
